5 Signs Your Tree Needs to Come Down

If you've got a tree on your property that doesn't look quite right, you might be wondering whether it's time to have it removed. Some problems are obvious — a tree leaning toward your house after a storm, for example — but others are easier to miss.

Here are five signs that a tree on your property may need to come down.

1. Large Dead Branches in the Crown

Dead branches — sometimes called "widow makers" — are one of the most common warning signs. A few small dead twigs are normal, but large dead limbs in the upper canopy are a serious hazard. They can break loose without warning, especially during wind, ice, or storms.

If more than a quarter of the crown is dead, the tree may be in decline and removal is often the safest option.

2. The Trunk Shows Signs of Decay

Look for soft or crumbling wood, large cracks, cavities, or fungal growth like mushrooms or shelf fungi growing on or around the base. These are signs of internal decay that can compromise the tree's structural integrity.

A tree can look healthy from the outside and still be hollow or rotting inside. If you suspect trunk decay, it's worth having a professional take a look.

3. The Tree Is Leaning More Than It Used To

Some trees grow at an angle naturally, and that's fine. But if a tree has started leaning recently — especially after a storm or heavy rain — it could mean the root system is failing. A sudden lean is an emergency situation and should be addressed right away.

4. Root Damage or Soil Heaving

Construction, grading, or even heavy foot traffic can damage a tree's root system. If you notice heaving soil on one side of the tree, exposed roots that look damaged, or the tree seems less stable than before, the roots may no longer be able to support it.

Root damage is often invisible until it's too late, which is why any signs should be taken seriously.

5. The Tree Is Too Close to Structures

Sometimes a tree is perfectly healthy but planted in the wrong spot. Trees growing too close to your house, garage, power lines, or septic system can cause expensive damage over time. Roots can crack foundations, branches can damage roofs, and falling limbs can take out power lines.

If a tree is encroaching on a structure, removal is often cheaper than the damage it can cause down the road.
